RICO RODRIGUEZ passes away

Legendary trombonist RICO RODRIGUEZ has passed away at the age of 80 following a short illness in a hospital.

THE SPECIALS announced his death on Twitter yesterday:

The ska and reggae musician was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2007 for services to music. In 2012 the Institute of Jamaica awarded him the Silver Musgrave Medal in recognition of his contribution to Jamaican music.

Rodriguez grew up in Kingston, Jamaica, before moving to England in the early 1960s.

In 1976 he recorded the album Man from Wareika under a contract with Island Records.

With the arrival of 2Tone he played with ska revival bands such as THE SPECIALS including on “A Message to You, Rudy”. He later formed the group RICO AND THE RUDIES.
