BUJU BANTON asks for early prison release

Convicted Jamaican artist BUJU BANTON has asked for early release from prison following a change in federal drug sentencing guidelines.

The singer, who is serving a 10-year sentence for a cocaine distribution conspiracy conviction, filed a motion asking to be released early under the change that reduces sentencing guidelines for most drug offences and can be applied retroactively.

The performer wants the court to reduce his sentence and release him to US immigration so he can be deported to Jamaica.

However the Tampa Tribune reports that BANTON’s, real name Mark Myrie, sentence is the minimum mandatory sentence for his conviction and the change won't apply to most minimum mandatory sentences.

Back in 2010 BUJU BANTON released his Before The Dawn album on the Gargamel label and picked up a Grammy award for it the following year.
