JERRY DAMMERS wins Ivor Novello award

Coventry’s JERRY DAMMERS, founding member of THE SPECIALS and the 2Tone label, has been given an ‘Inspiration Award’ at the 59th Ivor Novello Awards in London.

Former CLASH guitarist Mick Jones presented Dammers with his award and described him as “the Tsar of Ska”.

Dammers said the idea of protest music was still thriving.

“I don't think protest music necessarily has to have lyrics even,” he said. “You can have instrumental protest music, you know - jungle, dub-step, all of those are kind of abstract but still protest music like jazz was before.”

He also revealed that he almost missed the ceremony because his mother was ill and dedicated winning the award to her.

The 2Tone ska legend now performs with his SPATIAL AKA ORCHESTRA and has a show at the Barbican lined up this summer on 18 July.
