THE SPECIALS live in Cheltenham: fan-filmed video available

British ska band THE SPECIALS performed a long-overdue gig in Gloucestershire last night as part of a 15-date tour of the UK. Fan-filmed footage of “Monkey Man” can be seen below.

The Coventry band reformed in 2009 and had, up until now, kept fans in the West waiting more than 30 years for a local show.

The gig took place at Cheltenham Racecourse and was also something of a homecoming for guitarist Lynval Golding who grew up in Gloucester.

In spite of the impact the song “Ghost Town” had around the time of the 1981 riots, Golding made a clear distinction with the most recent civil unrest, referring on stage to “…those idiots in Gloucester copying those idiots in London…”

THE SPECIALS 2011 line-up includes original members Terry Hall, Lynval Golding, Neville Staple, Roddy Byers, Horace Panter and John Badbury; and during particular songs additional brass and string musicians.

Remaining dates on the tour, which many fear will be their last, include:

  • 25 Oct. - Brighton Centre
  • 27 Oct. - Bournemouth International Centre
  • 28 Oct. - Cardiff Motorpoint Arena
  • 29 Oct. - Ricoh Arena, Coventry
  • 31 Oct. - O2 Academy Brixton, London
  • 3 Nov. - Alexandra Palace, London

Original member Jerry Dammers, who was absent from the reformed band, will be performing with his own SPATIAL AKA ORCHESTRA at the Barbican Centre, London, on 18 November.

Support for the Cheltenham gig came from STONE FOUNDATION and BY THE RIVERS.
