Official release date set for BUJU BANTON

The US Federal Bureau of Prisons has confirmed that Jamaican reggae artist BUJU BANTON will be released in February 2019.

The official release date puts an end to rumours that BUJU, whose real name is Mark Myrie, would only serve six years due to time already served along with good behaviour.

The February 2019 date includes the time the singer served in prison prior to and between his two trials within the last year.

Attorney-at-law David Rowe explained that Myrie will get credit for 16% of "federal gain time" - time that he serves while not violating federal rules behind bars. If he violates the rules, his sentence may be extended.

Earlier this year Myrie was sent down for 10 years after being convicted on three drug-related charges as a result of a December 2009 incident in which he conspired to organise a drug deal within a police controlled warehouse.

His lawyer, David Markus, still plans to appeal the ruling in a Georgia courtroom.

Following his sentencing Myrie said that he intends to immerse himself in higher education

He currently remains listed in transit as is expected to be sent to a federal prison in Mississippi.
